Delhi Shops and Establishments Act, 1954
- Weekly holiday
- Every employee is allowed at least twenty-four consecutive hours of rest in every weekSection 17
- Close day
- Every shop and commercial establishment stays closed on a close day, which the Government specifies by notification and may set differently for different classes of establishment or different areasThis comes from the Labour Department's own copy of the Act at labour.delhi.gov.in. - National holidays
- In addition to the close day, every shop and commercial establishment closes on three of the national holidays each year, as the Government specifies by notificationDelhi has no separate national and festival holidays Act; section 16(2) sets the number, and the notified list of which three days has not been readSection 16(2)
- Opening on a close day
- A close day that coincides with a religious festival, the Mahurat day or the first day of the establishment's financial year may be worked, on twenty-four hours' notice to the Chief Inspector, if the establishment closes on one of the two days either side insteadSection 16(3)(ii)
- Pay for the holiday
- No deduction may be made for the close day or the weekly holiday. A daily-rated employee is still paid the daily wage, and a piece-rated employee the average of that week's wagesSection 18
